The blades of modern multi-megawatt wind turbines require innovative design and material concepts to cope with the dramatic weight and cost increase associated with the growing blade length. Carbon-/glass-fibre hybrid reinforcements can offer an interesting solution by combining the performance of carbon fibre with the good processability of glass fibre. Several high-performance hybrid reinforcements have been developed by Devold AMT using high strength carbon fibre. These non-crimp fabric reinforcements were optimized through the introduction of a new stitching and textile modifier technology developed by Devold. The infusion behaviour and mechanical performance of these materials were tested for comparison with today’s blade standard glass fibre composite solutions.
